Angie was released the following morning, as Woody had foretold.

Kate found her back behind the bar in The Old Locker, scratching her shoulder.

‘There were fleas in that place, Kate,’ she groaned, ‘I’m damned sure of it. How often do those blankets get washed? What filthy person might have been sleeping there before me?’

‘You’re out now, so try to forget it.’

‘You wait, she’ll be questioning you next. After all, you were the last person to see him. So take a flea spray with you when you go to the police station.’

‘I wasn’t planning on going to the police station,’ Kate said. ‘I think I’ve told her everything there was to tell.’

‘I bet you haven’t! That woman is bloody persistent.’

‘Did Fergal stay open and cope on his own here last night?’ Kate asked, eager to change the subject.

‘Yes, he did. It was very quiet, thank goodness. He told people it was my night off, but he didn’t elaborate on where I’d gone.’

‘So your reputation is still intact, Angie?’ Not, Kate thought, that Angie’s reputation was exactly the best in the village.

‘It’s important that no one knows where I was. Promise me that you won’t tell anyone?’

‘Of course I won’t. And I trust your cash is still safe in the bin?’

‘Yes, I checked as soon as I got back. And you know we were going to go to Plymouth tomorrow to get my ring? Well we’re not allowed to go now. We must stay in Tinworthy – which means she still suspects us, doesn’t it?’

‘Very probably,’ Kate admitted.

‘I’ll bet she’ll restrict you and Woody as well. Mark my words!’

‘Oh, I will, Angie.’ Kate was feeling sorry for her sister. ‘You’ll get your ring eventually. And try not to worry.’

‘But I do worry! I can’t help it.’

‘I’m going to do my damnedest to find out who did this,’ Kate said with feeling, ‘so we can all stop worrying.’

But it was hard not to worry about Angie, particularly as she was connected intimately with both victims.
